Shoutout to my compost bin for finally teaching me the right way
For months I was dumping all my kitchen scraps in there, every single thing from orange peels to onion skins, and wondering why it smelled so bad. Turns out I was adding way too many citrus peels and not enough browns, which my neighbor pointed out after she peeked at my bin last week. Has anyone else had to totally rethink their compost ratio after thinking they had it figured out?

Yeah, don't you hate it when you think you're nailing it and then find out you kinda messed up the whole time? I had a similar wake-up call when I realized my bin was more wet than a swamp because I was tossing in too many melon rinds. It's humbling but honestly now my compost is way healthier and doesn't attract every pest in the neighborhood.

Every single thing from orange peels to onion skins" - wait, you seriously thought citrus overload was fine?

nah i gotta disagree here. tossing in some citrus peels with onions is totally fine if you're not trying to grow those specific things right away. i compost everything from lemon rinds to garlic skins and my bin breaks it down just fine. the whole "citrus overload" thing is overblown unless you're literally dumping a grocery store's worth of limes in there every week. worms don't mind a little acidity and the microbes will handle the rest. plus that citrus smell helps keep the fruit flies away so honestly it's a win win.
