My lawn looked perfect but I was killing the local creek
I used a full gallon of chemical weed killer every month on my quarter acre in Portland. Saw a dead fish floating downstream after a heavy rain last Tuesday. How do you keep your yard green without poisoning everything?

That's a heavy thing to see, man. A full gallon every month seems like a lot, even for a quarter acre. What kind of weeds were you trying to nuke that needed that much firepower? Maybe the first step is figuring out if you even need to go to war with the whole lawn, or just spot-treat the real problem areas.

Yeah, the "spot-treat the real problem areas" part is key. I read that blanket spraying can wreck the soil for anything you want to grow later.

My buddy's lawn turned into a dead zone for two years.
