The day a roofer in Cheyenne showed me a better way to check a flue

I was on a job in Cheyenne about 12 years back and a roofer named Dale let me borrow his inspection camera so I could see down a flue I couldn't get a light into. Up until then I was doing everything by feel and a flashlight from the top, and I missed cracks more than I'd like to admit. Dale just shrugged and said he'd been using one for years and never looked back. I bought my own the next week and it has saved me from calling at least a few flues good when they weren't. Any of you still working mostly by feel, or did you switch over too?

Dale in Cheyenne had been using an inspection camera for years before you even ran into him? That part gets me. I figured those things didn't really catch on with roofers until maybe ten years ago, and here he was already set up back then like it was nothing. I was doing flues by feel with a flashlight for way longer than I want to admit, and I know I passed a few I shouldn't have. Just the idea of seeing down inside there instead of guessing makes my stomach drop a little. Guess some guys were ahead of the curve and the rest of us were just winging it.
