Caught my brush fraying on a job in Cincinnati, turns out I had been using the wrong technique for 3 years straight

The customer pointed out all these scratch marks on the clay tile liner and asked if it was new damage, and I realized my push-pull method was dragging the metal bristles sideways instead of straight up and down the whole time has anyone else had a customer spot a mistake you never even noticed yourself?

Had a customer point out I was leaving little crescent shaped gouges in a wooden mantel from overscratching with my wire brush. Felt like a total idiot because I'd been doing it that way for two years thinking I was being thorough. Switched to a nylon brush for the final pass and started using a gentle circular motion instead of scrubbing back and forth. Also started checking my work with a flashlight from a low angle to catch marks I couldn't see standing straight on. Customer actually ended up showing me a trick with a piece of felt wrapped around my brush handle to keep the metal from hitting the surrounding brickwork.

Funny how we can do something wrong for years and just never question it until someone else sees it.
