Finally broke down and got a real commercial dehydrator after ruining 40 pounds of tomatoes

Spent $700 on a used Excalibur from a restaurant supply auction and it paid for itself in one weekend of dried herbs and jerky. Anyone else fight with their home oven for way too long before making the switch?

Wasted a whole summer on oven trays myself before I saw the light. But what really sold me was not the drying time or the energy bill, it was the flavor difference. My home oven always left a faint burnt gas taste on anything I tried to dry for more than 4 hours, even with the door cracked. The Excalibur gives everything this clean, almost sun-dried taste that makes my garden herbs actually taste like they came from a high end spice shop. Plus I can do fruit leather and mushrooms at the same time without any of those flavors mixing.

That gas taste is the worst, totally ruins good jerky too.

Buddy of mine swore his gas oven was fine until his chili flakes came out tasting like a propane tank.
