That $30 dowsing rod from a flea market in Ohio actually found my well line
My backhoe hit a rock and I lost the trace on my well pipe out near the shed, so I grabbed a pair of bent coat hangers this old timer sold me for 30 bucks six years ago. Walked the yard for ten minutes, they crossed right where the pipe was buried two feet down, saved me a $400 call to the locator service. Anyone else got some dirt cheap tool that bailed them out of a jam?

Think it's confirmation bias. You probably had a good idea where it was already.

Holy crap, wait - you're saying I just got LUCKY?! I spent like 45 minutes poking around those woods behind the old mill, getting eaten alive by mosquitos, and you think it was basically a guess? There were THREE different spots I checked before I finally found that thing wedged under a fallen log near the creek. Confirmation bias my foot, I was ready to give up twice.

Just adding to what roberts95 said, people always underestimate how much their brain fills in the blanks... @seanjackson might not realize he subconsciously remembered some landmark or detail from a previous trip out there. It's like when you think you're guessing at a trivia question but your memory actually knows the answer somewhere deep down.
