Bicycle repair guy at a gas station taught me how to fix a chain in 2 minutes

I was outside Cleveland last summer, chain snapped on my bike middle of nowhere. Walked to the nearest gas station, this older guy in a dirty vest just grabbed the chain, showed me how to use a quick link without any tools. I had been carrying a whole repair kit for nothing. Has anyone else had some random stranger show you a way simpler fix than what you were doing?

Met a guy at a campsite who fixed my brake cable with a zip tie, totally changed how I pack now.

That zip tie trick is a game changer, right? I started carrying a small roll of baling wire after a similar incident with a broken tent pole. It's amazing how much peace of mind a few simple fixes can give you when you're out in the middle of nowhere. I also keep a tiny sewing kit with heavy thread for patching rips and tears. Do you have any other go-to repair items you wouldn't camp without now?

Honestly, zip ties are a crutch, not a fix. Learn real knots instead.
