Video call freeze vs cat on keyboard, which one actually wrecked my pitch
I was fully in the camp that any pet noise during a video call is a career killer, I even used to put my cat in the bathroom with a toy for every meeting. Then last week my cat jumped on the desk during a check in with a new client in Denver and knocked over my water glass, I froze and tried to ignore it, but the client just laughed and said 'at least your pet likes you more than my kids do.' That actually made us talk about pets for 2 minutes and the tension totally disappeared. But I've also had a call where my dog barked nonstop in the background and the other person kept asking 'is everything okay' and I could tell they were annoyed. So my question is, do you think the reaction depends on the person you're talking to or the type of interruption, like a quick meow versus a full chaos event? I'm curious if anyone else has found a threshold where a pet moment turns from funny to unprofessional.
Cat on the keyboard has always worked in my favor, mostly because people laugh and we move on. But a dog going nuts in the background for more than a few seconds is what kills the vibe every time.
