Pro tip: A guy in a Denver supply house told me to always check the subfloor with my bare hand.
I was grabbing a roll of padding last month and he saw me just looking at the plywood. He said 'Your eyes lie, but your palm feels every high spot and staple.' I tried it on the next job and caught three raised nails I would have missed, so do you all have any other simple tricks like that?

My old foreman in Phoenix swore by running a shop vac over the subfloor before you even start.

That's such a good point from your old foreman, @claire_gibson. It makes total sense to get all that grit and dust up first. Did he say it was mostly about getting a better bond for the adhesive, or was it more to stop debris from grinding down the new flooring over time? I've seen tiny bits of sand wreck a finish pretty fast.

My crew in Austin vacuums twice, just to be safe.
