A client in Portland told me to just glue the miter joint and skip the spline
I was putting up some crown molding in his dining room, and he insisted the glue would hold forever. I told him that's a bad idea, because wood moves with the seasons, and a spline gives it strength where the short grain is weak. He said I was making the job too hard, but I did it my way anyway. Has anyone else had a client push for a shortcut that you knew would fail down the line?

Maybe the client just wanted a simple fix for his own house.

Oh sure, a "simple fix." Famous last words before you find out the whole wall is held up by duct tape and hope.

Been there, done that. You start pulling at one loose thread and the whole thing falls apart. People always want the cheap fix but never think about what's hiding behind the wall. It's never just one small problem.
