Showerthought: my best week at work was the one where everything went wrong
Honestly last March I had a week where three jobs in a row went sideways, a chipper died on me in Federal Way, a customer changed her mind about a whole row of cedars twice, and my main guy called in sick Tuesday and Wednesday. It was a mess and I was beat by Friday, but me and the two guys left just slowed down and did each job one step at a time instead of rushing. I ended that week more sure about this work than I was after any easy week I can remember. Back when I started out I thought a good week meant zero problems, now I know better. I keep thinking about it because I just finished a smooth week and it felt kind of flat, like nothing stuck with me. Has anyone else had a rough stretch teach them more than a smooth one?
The hard weeks are the only ones that show you where your crew's weak points are, and that info is worth more than a smooth week ever hands you. Plus when stuff breaks you actually find out who stays calm when it counts, which you never learn on an easy job.
