I finally figured out why my job applications were getting ignored - the ATS was eating them whole
After sending out 40 applications in two weeks and getting zero callbacks, I started digging. Turns out I was using a fancy two-column resume template with graphics and icons. The applicant tracking system couldn't read it. I spent 3 hours last Sunday reformatting mine into a plain single-column layout with no tables or pictures. Got two interview requests by Tuesday. Has anyone else had a resume format totally tank their chances?

Oh man, my buddy's graphic design resume got eaten alive too until he stripped it down to plain text.

My wife was a design consultant and she spent years telling me that flashier resumes were better. I always took her word for it. Then last year when I was helping my nephew with his job hunt, we ran into this exact same problem. His fancy resume with charts and colors got zero replies. We stripped it down to just text and bullet points, plain Times New Roman, and he got three interviews the next week. That experience completely changed how I think about resume formatting. The machines really do need things simple and straightforward.
