Comparing old-school networking vs LinkedIn, the handshake still wins

Back in 2011 I got a job in Austin from a guy I met at a local meetup, just talked about bikes for 20 minutes. Last year I sent 40 LinkedIn messages to recruiters and got 3 replies, all canned. Has anyone else found that in-person stuff beats the algorithm every time?

Honestly I used to be all in on LinkedIn, thought it was the smart move to network from my couch. But this post makes me realize I was fooling myself, the algorithm just wants you to engage with content, not build real trust. Those 20 minute chat about bikes probably told that guy more about you than 100 resumes could. I had a similar wake up call last year when a coffee chat with a stranger got me further than a month of cold DMs. The handshake is basically a shortcut for "I can vouch for this person" and no app can fake that.
