The vacuum died halfway through cleaning the living room rug

So I finally got motivated to deep clean my place yesterday morning. Threw on some music, pulled out my old Bissell upright, and got maybe 10 minutes into the rug before it made this horrible grinding noise and just stopped. Smelled like burning plastic too. I tried the reset button and even checked the belt but nope, dead as a doornail. Ended up just grabbing a hand broom and dustpan to finish the job, which took forever and my back is killing me now. Does anyone know if those cheap stick vacs from Target are worth it for apartment living or should I just bite the bullet and fix this one?

Honestly not sure why everyone acts like a vacuum dying is the end of the world. @ellis.susan is right though, those stick vacs are okay for small places but don't expect miracles.

Bought a cheap stick vac from Walmart when my old one died and honestly it's been fine for my one bedroom apartment. It picks up cat hair and crumbs just fine but don't expect it to handle deep carpet like a full size upright would. I had to empty the little dust cup like three times during one cleaning session which got annoying. For hard floors and low pile rugs it works great though and my back doesn't hurt like it did wrestling with the big one. Just make sure you get one with a removable battery so you can swap it out if it dies mid clean.
