Rant: My friend bailed on our hike up Mount Rainier last minute, so I had to pick between staying home or going alone.

I chose to go solo and ended up taking a shorter trail I'd never tried before, which was actually pretty peaceful. Instead of feeling bummed, I got some great quiet time and saw a small waterfall I didn't know was there. Has anyone else had a canceled plan turn into a nice solo adventure?

Been there. My buddy flaked on a backpacking trip in the North Cascades. I went anyway and just did day hikes from a base camp. Found a perfect little lake for swimming that wasn't even on the map. Sometimes you just have to pack your bag and go. The quiet is its own reward.

That "quiet is its own reward" line is spot on. I've had plans fall through and ended up having a better time by myself. It's nice when things work out that way.

Totally get that. @elizabeths51 is right about the quiet being great, but Mount Rainier is a serious climb needing a guide or a lot of skill, not a casual hike. The shorter trail you found sounds perfect though. I had a friend cancel a kayak trip once and I just paddled around the local bay instead. Found a whole family of otters playing by the shore.
