My side project's signup rate went from 4 to 11 percent after I cut the form from 9 fields to 3, and I can't stop thinking about it
I run a small budgeting tool for freelancers out of my apartment in Halifax, and for the first 7 months I had a 9 field signup form because I figured more info meant better leads. Last month I got annoyed enough to strip it down to just email, password, and province, mostly to test something. Over the next 3 weeks the signup rate jumped from 4 percent to 11 percent, and the weird part is the accounts that did sign up were just as active as before. I always assumed people wanted to tell us about their business upfront, but it turns out the form was the wall, not the product. Has anyone else cut onboarding this hard and seen it hold up long term, or did it come back to bite you later?
That 4 to 11 jump in 3 weeks is wild. Did you track how many of those new signups made it past week two, or did some ghost once the budgeting part actually asked for real numbers?
