Switched to a sleeping pad with a foam layer after years of just air pads

I kept waking up cold even with a high R-value air pad on trips in the Rockies. Tried adding a 1/4 inch foam pad underneath and it made a huge difference for warmth and stability. Has anyone else tried this combo?

Funny how simple layers fix things all over life, not just camping gear.

I mean, is this really that deep? You discovered that putting a foam pad under an air pad stops it from sliding around and adds a little insulation, congrats. I've been doing that for years with a $20 closed cell foam roll from Walmart and it works fine, no need to overthink it. The real trick is just not letting your sleeping bag compress underneath you, which that extra layer helps with anyway.

Hold on, the expensive pads actually work better long term though. @ray136 gets it.
