Warning: a retired Nikon tech told me to stop cleaning every lens I open, and it took me 2 jobs to get it
Honestly I always figured a full teardown meant a full wipe down, every element, every time. Last month I dropped off some parts at a guy in Rochester who did Nikon service for 22 years, and he said most haze I was chasing was my own cleaning marks, not fungus. He pulled out a 50mm 1.4 he had just finished and showed me the front element under a loupe, all swirls from somebody who scrubbed too hard. He only touches glass when there is visible junk, and he uses a blower and a dry brush for the rest. Ngl it stung a bit since I have probably cleaned a hundred lenses that did not need it. So what is your rule for when a lens actually needs the glass wiped, or do you just leave it alone unless the customer complains?
