Appreciation post: my old way of cleaning lens helicoids was a mess

For years I used a heavy grease on lens focus threads, which just attracted dust and got gritty fast. Last month I switched to a light synthetic grease from a kit I got at a shop in Portland, and the difference is huge. Lenses stay smooth for months now without needing another clean. What grease do you all use for this job?

Portland? You found a camera shop in Portland that's still open. I thought they all closed a decade ago. That place by the old theater, maybe. What a miracle they had the right grease in stock.

You think that's a miracle, miles_young59? I once tried to use olive oil on a shutter. Still finding spots.

Remember when we thought Vaseline was a good idea for everything?
