Swapped my crimper for the cheap one on a 200 foot drop and lost 3 hours chasing a bad signal
Last Tuesday I was doing a 200 foot RG11 run in a old house in Richmond and my good crimper was back at the shop, so I grabbed the $12 one from the truck. Every fitting felt tight and looked fine, but the modem kept dropping and my meter showed a 6 dB loss I could not find, and it turned out the cheap tool was crushing the center conductor just enough to make it flaky. Has anyone else had a tool that passed the eye test but still wrecked the job, and how do you catch it before you waste a whole afternoon?
Ever tried pulling the fitting back off and looking at the center pin with a flashlight? A crushed conductor is easy to spot once you know to check, the pin sits crooked or the dielectric looks chewed up. Now I crimp one, cut it off, and inspect before I run the whole drop, saves me from chasing ghosts all afternoon.
