Spent $600 on a used dovetail jig and I think it made me worse at my job
Everybody in my shop swore a dovetail jig was the smart buy, so I grabbed a used Porter Cable setup off a guy in Cleveland for $600 about 4 months back. Thing is, I stopped cutting them by hand and now my layout skills got lazy, and I caught myself measuring twice off the jig instead of my own eye. Last month a client in Lakewood wanted hand cut look drawers and I fumbled the first two before I got my groove back. Anyone else feel like a tool made them forget something they used to just know? Wondering if I should sell it or keep it for the volume stuff.
Keeping it makes you money on the volume jobs, that's the whole point. Hand cutting is nice but if you're doing 20 drawers the jig pays for itself in time. Your eye didn't go anywhere, you just got rusty because you stopped using it, not because the tool stole it from you.
