Appreciation post: My lawyer friend in Austin made me see contracts differently

I used to just grab a free template online for every freelance job... figured it was fine. Then a buddy who's a lawyer looked at one I was about to sign for a $5,000 project. He pointed out three lines that basically let the client change the scope anytime without paying more. I rewrote it with his help, and now I have a solid 2-page agreement I tweak for each gig. It took maybe 30 minutes to set up the first time. Anyone have a go-to clause they always add to their service contracts?

Seriously, what was in the contract that made it seem worth that much? I've seen people get tricked by the fine print before (happened to a friend of mine, actually). Five grand is a lot to risk on something you almost signed without a second thought. Makes me wonder what they were promising you.

Actually, the upfront money was just part of it. The contract promised a huge cut of future royalties and a guaranteed spot in their next big ad campaign. Susan649, sometimes you gotta bet on yourself to get ahead. My friend's lawyer said the terms were solid for a new artist, just a standard high-risk, high-reward situation.
