Client told me my invoices were confusing and it stung but they were right

I had a commercial client in Houston tell me my invoices looked like I was trying to hide charges. I was just using generic line items like 'labor' and 'materials' with no breakdown. He showed me a competitor's invoice that listed every part and the time spent on each task. I changed my whole invoicing template that week, now every job has a clear breakdown by hour and part. Has anyone else had clients call them out on something that actually made their business better?

Heard a podcast with some accountant who said clear invoices save you from having to argue about payments later. Sounds like that worked out for you.

Clear invoices saved me hours of back and forth with clients.

My last invoice was actually for a doodle named Gus, and I put the wrong date on it. Client called me out right away, which was fine, but it made me realize how much one little mistake can throw things off. I mean, clear invoices help a lot, but it's more about being consistent with the dates and line items than just having a clean template. Idk, maybe it's just me but I still get a few confused clients even with detailed invoices.
