Chat with my dad about grocery spending last week

He told me he's been using the same $60 monthly food budget since 1998 and still makes it work somehow. I spend like $400 a month just on takeout and snacks without even thinking. Anyone else have a family member who makes you question all your spending habits?

My mom does the same thing with her grocery bill, it's wild. She plans every single meal around whatever's on sale that week and cooks in big batches on Sundays. I started doing that a few months ago and it cut my grocery spending by almost half, just making a list and sticking to it instead of wandering around the store buying random stuff.

Half your spending just from making a list and sticking to it... that's a pretty big number. Do you actually plan your meals around the sales flyer before you walk in the door, or do you just have a set list of stuff you buy no matter what? I've tried the list thing but I always end up caving and grabbing something extra at the checkout...

@jasonf17 You're out here meal prepping like a responsible adult while I'm still paying $15 for one sandwich delivered to my couch. Your mom and my dad must be in some secret club of budget wizards that our generation didn't get invited to. I feel personally attacked by how easy he makes it sound, meanwhile I dropped $80 at the gas station last week on energy drinks and taquitos without even noticing. Maybe I should just start setting my grocery budget to "whatever fits in a single canvas bag and pray it lasts" like he does. You think they hand out instruction manuals for this stuff or you just have to be born with the gene?
