Am I the only one who didn't know a dollar store birthday card costs $6.99 now?
I was standing in line at the grocery store on Tuesday with a card for my niece's birthday and the cashier rang it up at $6.99, which felt insane for a piece of folded paper with glitter on it. I checked my phone right there and found out the average greeting card price has jumped to around $5 to $8 depending on where you buy, and I used to grab them for two bucks at the dollar store back in 2019. So I started keeping a small stash of blank cards I buy in a 50 pack for $12 online, and I just write my own note inside, which my sister actually said she likes better anyway. That math works out to about 24 cents a card instead of seven bucks, and I send maybe 15 cards a year, so it's not huge money but it adds up. The weird part is I never thought of cards as a budget line until that receipt hit me in the face. Has anyone else switched to blank cards or am I late to this one?
My buddy Dave grabbed a wedding card at CVS last month and it rang up $8.50, he just laughed and put it back lol. He ended up going the blank card route too and now he writes these long goofy notes everyone loves.
