Serious question, is it ever okay to book a non-refundable hostel bed to save $12?
I did this in Prague last month and my flight got delayed, so I lost the whole $45. My friend says the risk is never worth it, but that extra cash adds up. Where do you all draw the line?

Man, I used to be all about those non-refundable deals to save a few bucks. Then I got stuck overnight in an airport and ate the cost of a rental car and a hotel room. The stress and lost money totally flipped me. Now I only book flexible stuff unless the savings are huge, like over a hundred dollars. That little bit of extra cash just isn't worth the peace of mind.

Totally get where @the_spencer is coming from. I was the same way, always chasing the cheapest ticket. Then my flight got canceled last minute and I was out the whole cost. That one bad experience taught me the hard way that a flexible plan is just smarter for anything important.

My buddy's wedding in Denver last year showed me the real cost. I booked a basic economy seat to save $60. Got sick two days before, couldn't fly. Lost the whole fare, plus had to buy a last minute ticket for triple the price just to make it. @the_spencer is right, the stress alone makes it not worth it. Now I look at the total trip risk, not just the ticket price. That cheap seat can end up being the most expensive lesson.
