TIL my watering can was drowning my ferns for the last 6 months

I used to just dump a full can on the top soil until I actually checked the roots and saw rot, now I water from the bottom with a tray and wait 20 minutes before dumping the rest.

Followed the same logic for years. Thought more water meant happier plants. Turns out ferns like their roots dry for a bit between drinks. Switched to a moisture meter and only water when it reads dry two inches down. Halved my watering frequency and they finally stopped dropping leaves.

Six months of rot taught me the same hard lesson.

That cycle of ignoring problems until they get worse seems to be a universal human trap.
