Why does nobody talk about the fight over the ending of 'The Overstory' at the library in Omaha?
Our group nearly split in two after someone called the last chapter 'a cop-out', and now we have a rule against discussing final pages for a month. Has your club ever needed a cooling-off period after a debate got too heated?

Ever think the book club rule is the real ending the author wanted us to fight over? I mean, maybe that's the point.

But what if the author left it vague on purpose to make us do the work? Like the ending of that one movie where you never see the monster, so everyone argues about what it looked like. The book club rule forces us to pick a side and defend it, which is way more fun than just being told what happened. It turns readers into part of the story.

Exactly! It's like when a movie ends on a cliffhanger just to get people talking.
