Our book club only picked bestsellers until a member's obscure choice opened my eyes

In my experience, I thought popular books guaranteed lively debates. Then, our club read a little known historical fiction set in my own city. The personal connections people shared during the talk were way more meaningful. Now, I see the value in seeking out hidden gems for discussion. Your mileage may vary, but that one pick shifted my whole view on book selection.

Oh man, my grandma's old cookbook had handwritten notes that started our best family stories.

Ever pick up a book just because the cover was weird? I found this beat-up paperback at a garage sale, some sci-fi thing no one's heard of. The story was set in a future city that felt like my old neighborhood, which was crazy. I ended up lending it to my cousin, and we talked for hours about the places it reminded us of. That beat-up book did more for me than any bestseller I forced myself to finish. Now I always check the discount bins for stories that might hit close to home.

Heard a podcast say the same about thrift store finds?
