Changed my take on 'The Great Gatsby' after a chat at the library in Boulder

A woman there said she saw Gatsby's parties as sad, not glamorous, because he was just buying friends. Now I can't unsee that lonely desperation in the book. Anyone else have a book club take that flipped your whole view?

Always thought they were cool but that makes total sense now.

It's funny how often that happens. You can look at something for years and just see the surface, then a single comment gives you the key to the whole thing. I see it with music, with art, even with how people act. That moment when the background pattern finally comes into focus changes everything. It's not just about getting it, it's about how the world seems to reorder itself around that new bit of sense.
