Had a chat with a eurogame snob that made me question heavy themes
My buddy Matt said that games like Terraforming Mars are just spreadsheets with art, and he only plays stuff with deep political stories like Twilight Struggle. I get where he's coming from, but isn't the fun of a game about mechanics and victory points, not the theme? Who else thinks the story in a game matters more than the numbers?

Oh gosh, Matt sounds like someone who'd rather read a rulebook for two hours than play the actual game. Your buddy Dave reading the backstory out loud is giving me flashbacks to a friend who once made us sit through the entire lore of a game about fungi before we could touch a single spore. Sometimes you just want to push some tokens and laugh at bad luck, you know?

Honestly, did you ever have that one friend who tried to get everyone into Arkham Horror because of the Lovecraft story, and nobody could agree on the rules for an hour? My buddy Dave once spent a whole Saturday trying to sell us on a game about Cold War politics. We finally played it, and he spent 45 minutes reading the backstory out loud while the rest of us just wanted to roll dice and score points. It's like, man, I get you love the theme, but I'm here to push cubes around and yell at my friends, not write a book report.
