Why I forge everything on a basic steel plate
Some swear by full anvils, but my steel plate handles all my projects. Do you think the tool or the skill matters more?

Totally agree, I've seen stunning work done on way worse setups than a good steel plate.

What kind of steel plate are you working with? I read something a while back about how a lot of historical smithing was done on way simpler blocks than we use now. It seems like the skill really is the biggest part, because a great smith could probably make do with a rock. Does having perfect tools just let you work faster, or does it actually change what you can make?
