Took me 6 months to realize my anvil was way too soft

I had this old anvil I got from a guy in Phoenix that just wouldn't hold a good edge no matter what I did. Finally brought it to a buddy's shop and he hit it with a file, told me the face was basically mild steel the whole time. Has anyone else dealt with a mislabeled anvil or one that was secretly junk?

Man yeah I read somewhere that a lot of old anvils got ruined by people welding mild steel plates on top to fix them. Sounds like yours might have been one of those. Sucks you wasted 6 months on it though.

Check the serial number against old manufacturer catalogs online.

Serial number might be a long shot if someone welded on it. Hard to tell anymore.
