My new forge hood was a $500 game changer

I finally bit the bullet and spent about five hundred bucks on a proper side-draft forge hood for my backyard shop. For years I just used a basic overhead fan, but my eyes would still sting and my lungs would feel rough after a long day. I built the hood myself from sheet metal, following some plans I found online, and the difference is night and day. The smoke and fumes just get pulled right out now, and I can actually see my work without squinting through haze. It took a full weekend to put together and install, but it was worth every penny. I wish I hadn't waited so long to do it. Has anyone else built their own ventilation setup and have any tips for keeping it clean?

Oh man, that reminds me of my buddy who tried to just use a box fan in his window for welding. His whole garage looked like a fog machine went off. He finally caved and built something like yours last year and won't shut up about how much better it is.

Did he at least get any good welds through the fog?
