My neighbor said measuring cups vs kitchen scale is a waste of time, I spent a week proving them wrong

She swore by volume measuring for cookies and said grams are pretentious, but after 5 batches of chocolate chip cookies with the same recipe one way was flat and one way was perfect, so which camp do you fall in, and have you ever actually done a side by side test?

Oh man, I feel you on this one. I had the exact same fight with my sister in law last year, she swore cups were fine and scales were for snobs. I did the test too, same dough, same bake time, and the difference was nuts. The weighed batch came out with that perfect chewy inside and crispy edge, but the cup version spread like a puddle and was flat as a pancake. It's not about being fancy, it's about consistency and not having to guess. I'm team scale all the way now, especially for cookies where a little too much flour or sugar ruins everything. Your neighbor might not admit it, but you proved your point.

I'm actually gonna have to disagree a bit, scales aren't always better for everything. Some recipes are way more forgiving than cookies, like soups or stews where a little extra flour doesn't matter much. For cookies though, I get it, but cups are fine if you know how to scoop properly without packing.

Just keep one measuring cup you actually trust for liquid stuff and get a cheap scale for flour and sugar and you'll be set.
