Hot take: My cake fail has me questioning recipe flexibility
I ran out of butter for a cake and used vegetable oil instead. The whole thing sunk in the center when it baked. Some bakers say you should always follow the recipe, but others think swaps are part of learning. Idk, maybe it's just me, but now I'm scared to experiment. What's your take on substituting ingredients?

Read somewhere that oil changes the whole moisture balance in cakes. Your swap probably made the structure too weak to hold up. Definitely keep experimenting though, just maybe start with smaller changes next time

Oil really changes how cakes hold up, @sarah818. Why bother with it in the first place?

My last oil swap made a cake that tasted like sadness.
