My old VHS copy of Troll 2 vs the remastered blu ray, and honestly the grainy tape wins
Pulled out my 1994 taped-off-cable copy of Troll 2 last Friday for the group and the tracking wobble and muffled audio had everyone howling way more than the clean blu ray we watched back in March. The remaster is sharp, sure, but it kills the whole vibe, like the movie is trying too hard to be a real film instead of a weird accident we found in a basement. Does anyone else keep the crummy version around on purpose, or am I just being stubborn about it?
Tape grain is the whole point, yeah. I fought that for a while because I wanted my tapes to sound clean and "good." Kept messing with the levels trying to get rid of the hiss. Then a friend told me to just let the tape do its thing. Started recording hotter, not clipping but pushing it, and the grain stopped being a problem and started being part of the sound. Once I stopped treating it like a flaw I actually got somewhere with it. Now I leave the hiss alone and it sits under everything like glue.
