A comment at a thrift store about Birdemic made me rethink bad movie night

Was digging through the DVD bin at Savers last Saturday for like 50 cents each. Some guy next to me saw me grab Birdemic and goes 'oh man you actually pay money for that garbage?' I laughed but then got to thinking. He doesnt get it. For me the joy isnt about the movie being good. Its about the group chat blowing up with reactions. The laugh track we make ourselves. My buddy Mike still quotes 'I got your signal' at least once a week. Has anyone else had someone outside the club totally miss the point of why we watch this stuff?

Man I used to be that guy honestly. A few years back my friend wanted me to come over to watch The Room and I was like why would I waste time on something thats so obviously terrible. Sat through it mostly quiet the first time wondering what the hell was wrong with everyone. Then about halfway through the spoon picture scene something just clicked and I started laughing my ass off. Now I get it completely. Its not about the quality of the movie at all its about how bad it is bringing people together and creating those stupid inside jokes that stick around forever. That cashier probably goes home and watches the same stuff ironically without even realizing it.

Found The Room on VHS once. Cashier asked if it was a joke.
