PSA: Stop putting sunflower hearts in every feeder

Had a guy at the bird supply shop tell me I was wasting money on sunflower hearts because they leave shells everywhere. He was right. Switched to whole black oil sunflower seeds last month and the messy hull problem is gone. Anyone else get roasted by a store employee and actually learn something?

Cracked open a bag of hearts last week and watched a chickadee try to eat one whole. Looked like me struggling with a burrito that's falling apart. Definitely going back to whole seeds next time, my yard cleanup is already bad enough without husks everywhere.

Nah, hearts are way easier for the little birds to eat tho.

Yeah, you're right... I always feel bad watching them struggle with the big ones.
