I bought a cheap bird feeder that was a total waste of $30

I got a fancy looking one online that promised to be squirrel proof. The plastic latch broke after two weeks, and the whole thing fell apart in a storm. I lost about $30 worth of seed when it hit the ground and got soaked. Has anyone found a feeder that actually holds up to weather and squirrels?

Honestly, that line about squirrels being tiny furry engineers is so true. Tbh I'm convinced they have little hard hats and blueprints. My last "squirrel proof" feeder just became a fancy all-you-can-eat buffet for them after they bent the metal latch. Ngl, watching a squirrel win feels like getting outsmarted by a toddler with a PhD in mischief. I just accepted my defeat and bought the heaviest, simplest metal feeder I could find. It's not pretty, but at least it's still hanging there.

My neighbor welded a steel cage around his feeder after the squirrels chewed through a plastic one. It looks like a tiny bird jail, but it works. I tried a pole with a big plastic dome above the feeder, but they just jumped from the tree. The only thing that slowed them down was putting the feeder on a thin wire between two posts, ten feet from any branch.

Total scam. Yeah, that's the worst. Those online ads get you every time. I've been through three so-called squirrel proof feeders. The metal ones seem to last a bit longer, but honestly, a determined squirrel is like a tiny furry engineer. I just gave up and started putting out cheap seed on the ground for them and better seed in a basic tube feeder for the birds. It's less frustrating.
