Bought a $40 heated bird bath and it cracked in two weeks
I saw the cold weather coming and picked up a heated bird bath from a local home store. It was around $40 and seemed solid enough, but after the second freeze it developed a hairline crack. On the third cold morning I found the basin split clean in two, water all over the ground. The birds had been using it every day too, which makes me feel worse. Has anyone found a heated bird bath that actually holds up through a real winter?

$40 gets you a bird bath that lasts about as long as a bag of cheap ice melt. Sounds like you bought a "heated" bird bath that was really just a regular one with a sticker on the box. At least the birds got a few days of luxury before the inevitable failure.

Wait, are you saying that thing actually held water for days? @jennifer_jenkins probably saw this coming.

That "bag of cheap ice melt" line is spot on... I bet the plastic they use for those is so thin it can't handle the expansion when water freezes. Probably the same stuff they make cheap sleds out of.
