Had a customer tell me I was overthinking timing chains

Guy rolls in with a clattering Ford 5.4, demands I just slap a new chain on without checking the guides. I started explaining about plastic Guide wear and he cut me off saying "a chain is a chain, just put it on." Three days later he's back because the new chain ate through a cracked guide and grenaded the timing cover. Why do some folks think years of engineering knowledge is just fluff?

A chain is a chain" - yeah that line always kills me. Did he actually watch you pull the old plastic guide pieces out of the oil pan? Or did he just assume you were making stuff up? Here's what gets me: these same guys will spend $300 on a name brand chain but balk at a $20 guide. I'm genuinely curious, what did his face look like when he came back with that cracked timing cover?

That three day turnaround had to be frustrating for everyone involved, @terryw67. I bet his face went from smug to shocked when he saw that crack running through the timing cover. It's wild how people ignore basic wear items then act surprised when things blow up.

All that fuss over a couple guides and a hairline crack.
