Wasted $60 on a solar filter that turned my sun photos into orange blobs

I bought a cheap solar filter off an auction site last month to photograph the partial eclipse. The pictures came out looking like a blurry orange basketball with zero surface details. Turns out it was just a piece of welding glass sandwiched in plastic. Anyone else get fooled by a budget filter that did nothing?

So did you just realize it was welding glass after you got the photos?

Read a writeup from some film photography blog about this a while back. They said the welding glass acts like a super dark ND filter so you can get those crazy long exposures in the middle of the day. Makes sense now that I see your results, the photos have that hazy, dreamy look to them but also sharp where it matters. I never would have thought to try something like that, honestly. Kind of brilliant if you ask me, just grabbing a random piece of glass and turning it into a lens filter.
