TIL it takes 11 days to cancel a gym membership you signed up for in one phone call
I joined a gym near my place in Tucson back in March because the signup took literally 4 minutes on the phone. When I tried to cancel in July, it turned into a whole mess. First they said I had to come in person, then the guy at the desk said only a manager could do it, and the manager was never there when I showed up. I ended up mailing a certified letter, which cost me $8, and they still billed me for one more cycle before it finally stopped. Total time from my first call to the last charge: 11 days and about 5 phone calls. Is there some trick I'm missing for getting out of these things faster, or is the runaround just the whole business model?

11 days and 5 calls sounds annoying but I'm not sure this is some big scam. Gyms have always been bad at canceling, going back to the 90s when my dad had to fight with a Bally Total Fitness for two months. The certified letter costing $8 is the part that would bug me more than the phone calls, honestly. You paid $8 to cancel something you signed up for with a phone call, which is the real joke here. Most of these places bank on people giving up and just letting the charges ride, so yeah, the runaround is kind of the point. But 11 days is not that wild for this kind of thing, plenty of people deal with way worse.
