The dig site supervisor told me to stop brushing away dust and start using a toothpick instead

I was cleaning a piece of pottery from a Roman site in York last Wednesday, and he said I was scattering tiny paint fragments. Switched to a wooden toothpick, and the detail suddenly popped out. Has anyone else found that switching tools changes what you see in the field?

Totally agree, switching to a dental pick changed everything for me on a Suffolk dig last spring.

Brought a set of jeweler's screwdrivers along too for the really tight spots.
