Just read that a 3,000-year-old wooden structure found in England was preserved because the ground was so wet, basically pickling it.

Found that detail in a BBC article about the Must Farm settlement, and it made me picture a giant, ancient pickle jar underground.

That "pickled down there" thing is spot on. It's wild how much stuff just gets saved by accident. I find old tools in damp crawl spaces all the time, and they look brand new. Meanwhile, the stuff left out in a dry shed just turns to dust. It makes you wonder what's under our feet right now that we'll dig up in a thousand years.
