That Bradford pear I saved from a bad topping job in Springfield is now a hazard

About four years back, a homeowner had a crew butcher a big Bradford pear, leaving ugly stubs. I did a proper reduction cut on the main leader to try and save it. Checked it today, and that same cut is now a huge cavity full of carpenter ants because the wound never closed right. The whole tree is basically hollow. What's the weirdest thing you've found growing out of a bad pruning wound?

I once found a whole bird's nest tucked into a rotten cavity where a limb had been torn off. The tree was half dead but that family of robins didn't seem to mind. It's amazing what moves in once the rot sets in.

My old oak had the same thing with a squirrel nest. I left the deadwood up and they used it for three seasons.

My maple's got a dead limb that looks like a squirrel condo complex. I keep meaning to cut it down but I'm basically running a free Airbnb for rodents at this point.
