A guy in the park called my polesaw 'cheating' and I've been thinking about it all weekend
I was doing a small cleanup job at a park in Salem on Saturday when an older guy walking his dog stopped and watched me limb a maple. He pointed at my polesaw and said back in his day they climbed everything with just a handsaw and a rope, and that the power tools were 'cheating.' I laughed it off at the time, but driving home I kept wondering if he had a point about learning the basics first. I do think newer guys skip hand saw work and never really learn how a cut should feel before they grab a chainsaw. Curious what you all think, do you make new hires do hand saw work first or let them run the power stuff right away?
It's the same thing with cooking where people learn on gas stoves then can't cook over a fire, or drivers who never learned stick. The tool gets the job done but you never learn what the wood or the road is telling you. Basics first is annoying but it sticks with you lol.
