Used to hate subbed anime, now I only watch it

For like 5 years I was firmly in the dubbed camp. I couldn't stand reading subtitles during fight scenes. Then my buddy forced me to watch the last episode of Attack on Titan season 4 part 2 with subs because the dub wasn't out yet. The voice acting was so much more emotional and raw. I went back and rewatched the whole series subbed over the next month. Now I can't do dubbed at all. The English voices sound flat to me now even on shows I used to love. Has anyone else made the switch and felt this way?

Switched to subs when I realized my English vocabulary only had like 50 words in it and I was understanding nothing the characters actually said. Now I just nod along during fight scenes and pretend I catch everything. Half the time I'm just reading subtitles and missing the action anyway.

@theagibson, I get why you went to subs but I've always found that if I relax and just listen, the context fills in the gaps. Half the time I think people miss more by trying to read every word than they would by just paying attention to what's being said on screen.

My buddy Jake tried the same thing with anime, thought he could just relax and pick it up from context. He ended up watching a whole season of Attack on Titan thinking the characters were arguing about who ate the last slice of pizza instead of, you know, giants eating people. It was a mess. Now he watches everything with subs and still complains he misses the big fight moments because he's reading. But at least he knows what's actually going on now.
