Saw a fan sub debate at Anime Boston 2023 that made me stop watching dubs completely
I was at Anime Boston in 2023 waiting in line for a panel and these two guys next to me got into it about subtitle accuracy for like 30 minutes. One guy pulled up a scene on his phone and showed how the official sub changed a joke so the punchline didn't even land the same way. I had never thought about how much gets lost in translation before that moment. Now I try to watch subs first for any show I actually care about, even though I still throw on dubs when I'm doing chores. Does anyone else have a show where the sub and dub feel like two totally different stories?

Have you ever gone back and watched a show you loved as a kid and realized the dub was just making stuff up? I used to be all about dubs, no shame, because reading while eating chips is a pain (and I am not gonna pause every five seconds). Then I rewatched Ouran High School Host Club subbed and the whole thing hit different, like the jokes actually made sense and the characters sounded like real teens instead of weird adults pretending. Ghost Stories is the wild one though, the dub is basically a whole new comedy and the sub is way more serious, so it really does feel like two shows. Now I do subs for stuff I care about and dubs for folding laundry, no regrets either way.
